After school started in eastern Austria, more than 100 positive self-tests were registered in the three provinces, according to preliminary figures. In Vienna, there were 80 positive rapid tests for now.
After schools were only open for one or two hours on Monday and children were tested before school started, no school-related measures are expected for the time being, the office of city health councillor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) told APA.

For the time being, 80 positive antigen rapid tests at Viennese schools
On the first day of school, more than 100 positive self-tests were registered in the three provinces, according to preliminary figures.

In Vienna, according to figures from the education directorates, 80 “nose-picking” tests were successful, in Lower Austria 35 and in Burgenland eight. This corresponds approximately to the number of positive school tests at the end of May. For the time being, these are regarded as suspected cases and must first be confirmed by PCR tests. The Viennese city councilor for education Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) would have expected more cases at the start of the tests, he told journalists on Monday afternoon. However, he said he expects these numbers to rise significantly in the coming weeks.

Faßmann optimistic
During a visit to schools in Vienna, Education Minister Heinz Faßmann (ÖVP) expressed optimism that continuous face-to-face teaching will be possible in the fall. In addition to optimism, this will also require patience as infection rates soar, the minister said.

All students must take three Corona tests per week for the first three weeks of school attendance, one of which must be a PCR test. Testing can be done at the school; alternatively, certificates from other authorized testing sites can be brought in. Teachers must also test three times per week, but there is a difference according to vaccination status: three antigen tests are sufficient for vaccinated educators, while unvaccinated ones need an (external) PCR test once a week in addition to two antigen tests.
